Captive Nations Week
'one of the wildest kinds of Cold War kind of thing you ever seen in your life'
It’s the third week of July, and you (may not) know what that means—it is Captive Nations Week. Joe Biden, as expected, made his CNW proclamation a few days ago, and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) is holding a “Captive Nations Summit” on Wednesday.
Subscribers may recall that the Captive Nations Week tradition began in 1959, and VOC co-founder Lev Dobriansky gets most of the credit for authoring the Congressional resolution that birthed CNW, and former Secretary of State Dean Rusk once described as “one of the wildest kinds of Cold War kind of thing you ever seen in your life.”
I had intended to write a series of VOC INFO blog posts about the “Captive Nations Lobby” (and what that has to do with the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation) by now. Instead I’m going to try to do it all this week! We’ll start with the Nazi collaborators tomorrow…
